Measurement

There is no stable baseline for answer engine visibility right now

Marketing Engineering  ·  27 August 2026  ·  Field note

The note

Search had a baseline. Clicks, impressions and average position moved on a known cadence against a handful of announced updates a year. Answer engines have no equivalent today, and reporting on them as though they do produces confident nonsense.

Why the ground keeps shifting

Through 2026 the answer surfaces have changed repeatedly in how an answer is composed and displayed, rather than in how results are ranked. Client visibility shifts in directions the accounts themselves do not explain, separately from the announced core updates in the same window.

Composition changes do not arrive as announcements. Nobody publishes a note saying answers are now shorter, or that fewer sources are named, or that a particular format is being preferred. The change simply appears in the output, and every visibility figure measured before it is now measuring a different thing.

What that obliges anybody reporting on it to do

  • Never present a month over month drop as a performance verdict. Check first whether the answer format changed. A fall with no on-site cause, no competitor movement and no announced update is a platform change until somebody proves otherwise.
  • Ship the caveat with the chart. A visibility trend line goes out saying plainly that the measurement surface moved during the period. Burying that in a footnote is the same as omitting it.
  • Re-baseline in the open. When the prompt set is rebuilt, the line starts again and says so. Splicing a new prompt set onto an old trend is the standard dishonest chart in this discipline.
  • Treat spoken figures as unconfirmed. Numbers circulating about citation lift, the share of traffic coming from answer engines, and how much of search now carries a generated answer are mostly unsourced. Shape work with them. Never publish them.
Working rule

A trend line whose measurement surface moved is a new line, and it says so

The uncomfortable consequence

If the baseline is unstable, a twelve month visibility target is not a specification. It is a wish with a number attached. The honest form of a target here is a coverage figure and a structural one: how many of the questions buyers ask have a page built to answer them, and how many of those pages can actually be crawled and rendered.

Both of those are inside your control, and neither one shifts when a platform changes how it composes an answer. Report the visibility figure alongside them, with its caveat, rather than instead of them.
